Quilting and Burned Rice

I started off the day working on adding the border to the Star quilt and remembered I had to make rice for one of my doggies who is on a strict diet. With my bad memory, I should know better by now. After putting the rice on the stove I went back to my sewing and then I started smelling something and then realized it was the rice, well, it burned to a crisp. Thank goodness I still had a bit more rice left. That's happened a lot to me, burning something because I go and do something else. I find it so hard to stay put in the kitchen while something is cooking though. Aren't all artist suppose to suffer some degree of ADD? That sounds so much better than ageing. My friend and I always seem to forget some word or somebody's name when we're having a conversation. We always end up saying, "Yea, you know which one I'm talking about, yea, that's the one, but darn it I can't remember the name." Yet, we always do know what the heck we're talking about. It's getting pretty pathetic.

We must be twins because I do the same thing---computer or sewing distractions more than anything. I completely ruined a pan making simple syrup for iced tea one time. It was past caramelized and into a big black puff by the time I got back into the kitchen. You would have thought I would have at least smelled the caramel smell first. And I forget to get back to the laundry which drives my husband nuts.

Hope the quilting went better than the cooking :-)

*blushes*

Make that triplets - I get on the computer making pages or at the sewing machine and the next thing I know, my baked tater is a shriveled little lump in the oven. :)

A. You need a rice cooker... (they really work and do not burn...)

B. I think artists are a forgetful bunch...

There is a story in my family of someone standing at the refrigerator door holding a mayo jar and wondering, "Am I taking it out or putting it back?"

It's not aging - except that aging makes it worse. When I was in my 20's and home with kids I'd turn on the tea kettle and then head to the sewing room. When the smoke alarm went off was when I remembered about the tea kettle. I think I burned up 4 of them before I got one that whistled. Now I use the microwave to head my mug of water. I hate to think how many times I find a cold mug of water in the microwave.

I have to set a timer and bring it into the quilting room so I don't burn things too! welcome to the stash ring!

Yep sounds like me. I always set my timer in my kitchen so it reminds me to come back in. My daughter probably gets irritated by the constant noise interruption to whatever she is doing, but she doesn't say anything, because the of the alternative - burnt food.
